Prepping seed potatoes

  • Purchase seed potatoes from your local gardening store
  • Cut seed potatoes into chunks, each chunk including an “eye”
  • Let them sit out on the counter for at least 2 days, to “callous”

Planting

  • Choose a place in your garden to plant
    • DO NOT PLANT THEM RIGHT ON THE EDGE OF YOUR GARDEN, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MOUND THE POTATOES.
  • Till your garden
  • Use a measuring tape to make a straight line in your garden
  • Place chunks of seed potatoes in the ground at least 1 foot apart, with the eye facing UP
  • Mound the dirt over top of the potatoes

Managing your potatoes

  • As your potatoes start to grow and sprout out of the ground, use a hoe to mound the dirt up over top of the potatoes. (this will allow your seed potatoes to produce more potatoes, and keep them from getting direct sun and turning green.)

Harvesting potatoes

  • Once your potato plants (above ground) start to die (usually during August) you will pull the plants out of the ground, and then use a potato fork to dig the potatoes out of the ground.
